About the BMI Calculator

This BMI (Body Mass Index) calculator computes the standard BMI value from your height and weight. It supports both metric (centimetres / kilograms) and imperial (feet + inches / pounds) units, and shows your BMI category on a color-coded scale. Everything runs in your browser — no data leaves your device.

BMI categories

  • Underweight — BMI below 18.5.
  • Normal weight — BMI 18.5 to 24.9.
  • Overweight — BMI 25.0 to 29.9.
  • Obese — BMI 30.0 or above.

How the calculation works

BMI is computed as weight in kilograms divided by the square of height in metres: BMI = kg / m². For imperial inputs, the calculator first converts feet and inches to metres and pounds to kilograms, then applies the same formula.

How to use

  1. Pick Metric or Imperial from the unit system dropdown.
  2. Enter your height and weight in the matching fields.
  3. Click Calculate. Your BMI value, category, and position on the scale appear below.

Frequently asked questions

Is BMI accurate for everyone? BMI is a screening tool based on population averages. It does not distinguish between muscle and fat, so very muscular people may register as overweight without being unhealthy. Always consult a healthcare professional for individual assessment.

Does this tool store my measurements? No. All calculation happens locally in your browser.

Are the categories the same worldwide? The categories shown here follow WHO guidelines. Some countries (such as Japan) use lower cut-offs for overweight and obesity.

Can children use this calculator? This tool uses adult BMI ranges. Children's BMI should be assessed using age- and sex-specific percentile charts.
